You Better Work: Week Forty Five

Written by Lindsay Scouras

Would you be mad at me if I said that sometimes, taking daily #ootd pictures isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? Don’t get me wrong, I love having an outlet in which I can express myself everyday. And I do enjoy the photos and reading your comments and seeing your likes. But sometimes, you wake up late and throw on the closest thing you can find. Sometimes, you get home and don’t have the energy to snap photos of your outfit because your rattiest sweats have been calling your name since noon. Many times, you leave the office so late that it’s pitch dark and therefore, unsuitable for poorly lit iPhone pics.

Which is probably why, during week forty five of whatever this thing is that I’ve been doing for almost a year, I only ended up with two outfit photos. So this is a relatively short post, but I’m getting closer to keeping up with these ensembles in real time (today is officially one week away from my anniversary at my job). And with that, I bring you the shortest #ootd post ever.

Monday:

limited sweater/express top/forever 21 pants/old navy flats & earrings

This outfit is a prime example of one of those mornings when it’s like oh crap it’s cold and I didn’t pick out my outfit the night before and I just need to not be naked and get to work on time. On those days, I like to keep it simple with black & white with a pop of color. Okay, so gray isn’t my usual “pop,” but I thought a hint of sparkle would suffice.

Tuesday:

j.crew blazer, top & jeans/old navy flats/ily couture necklace

It’s no secret that there are certain stores that I frequent (or used to, before there was thirty miles of water between me and the nearest mall). I don’t ever intentionally wear one brand from head-to-toe, but sometimes when I go to tag the makers of the various pieces in my ensemble, I find that I am in fact a walking advertisement. Not that I’m complaining; the reason I love J. Crew is because all of the basics are so interchangeable. But you have to jazz it up with fun accessories, like these cap toe flats (that I have almost worn into the ground) and this statement necklace that I scored on a major sale.

That’s it for this (very short) week. Let’s make a date for the next installment!

You Better Work: Week Forty Four

Written by Lindsay Scouras

It may not seem like it, given my lack of weekly fashion recaps, but I have actually been keeping up with my daily outfit photos ever since returning from the holidays. You can check out my last installment here

Here we are now at week forty four- hard to believe it’s this close to a year!

Monday

j.crew skirt/ny & co top/c wonder skirt & necklace/rocketdog pumps

By now you know I can’t resist a nautical ensemble, even in the winter. I try to wear this necklace as often as I can, because I wanted it so bad and it was an amazing sale find. It just only goes with so many things, and also, it’s loud. Like you can hear me when I’m coming down the hall loud. Sometimes I feel like a dog with a very jingly collar. Hey, fashion is all about make a statement, no? I guess sometimes the statement is, “HERE I COME!!!”

Tuesday

old navy sweater/j.crew skirt/target flats/jewelry sale necklace

Have you noticed that despite winter’s refusal to vacate the premises, I am still trying to pretend it’s almost spring with my outfits? Joke’s on you, because this is actually a wool skirt. It still won’t stop me from wearing this pastel flower necklace, which I picked up from the semiannual underground jewelry sale that my friend Jaimie’s uncle has in Rhode Island. We’re talking tables and tables of jewelry for mere dollars, and they’re all from places like Talbots, Lord & Taylor, etc. I mean, you have to show up with cash at an industrial park on a random weekday morning, but still, totally worth it.

Wednesday

old navy coat & flats/j.crew sweater/tj maxx pants/kate spade hat & bracelets

Is there a better time to wear a new Kate Spade cloche than on National Hat Day? I think not. I was so excited to receive this gorgeous chapeau as a Christmas gift, that I was totally overwhelmed as to what to wear it with. It’s a very light tan with a black ribbon, accented by a gold stud. Sounds like on paper that it would go with anything, but the task was far more daunting in real life.

Thursday

forever 21 sweater/old navy jacket/j.crew skirt/express tights/payless booties/ily couture earrings
I may have a small obsession with this moto jacket/girly pink + polka dot combo, as this is very reminiscent of an outfit I wore just the week before. But seriously, I cannot believe how long it has taken me to acquire this style of jacket. It’s just so versatile! (The fact that it was only $27 didn’t hurt either.) And yes, I was told that I could totally wear this cheeky sweater to work (as long as you know, it wasn’t like a board meeting or something) and it’s now probably one of my favorite pieces that I own. I will literally wear it with anything, whether it’s a flirty skirt or skinny jeans.

Friday

c wonder sweater/banana republic top/j.crew pants/old navy flats

Listen, it takes work to try to put together these outfits everyday. Some are winners, some are less than, but one thing’s for sure- by Friday, I’m a little spent. And more often than not, my outfit of choice when I haven’t prepared anything ahead of time are these polka dot chambray skimmers and some sort of sweater. When you work at a whaling museum, a graphic top like this always makes sense.

Thanks for checking in for my week in outfits! More to come next week 🙂

Throw It In the Bag

Written by Lindsay Scouras
all aboard ship clutch/essex scout/newspaper clutch/all typed up clyde

Once again, Kate Spade has thrown a surprise sale our way. This one isn’t just any sale, it’s being touted as the “Greatest Hits Sale” of some of their favorite bags. It should have been called “All the Fun Bags That Lindsay Has Always Wanted Sale” as there are some on here that I have been coveting for months. My favorite Kate Spade purses are the non-traditional ones, especially the clutches. They are just so fun and you can’t not be noticed when you carry them. I have the Great Gatsby Book Clutch and I get comments about it all the time (unfortunately, most of them are “did you really bring a book to this restaurant/party?” so apparently people think I’m terribly antisocial).

Unfortunately, I won’t be pulling the trigger on this particular sale given that it’s not even a month post-holiday and I need another purse like I need a hole in the head. Even though I’m kind of dying over the boat clutch (since I first pinned it a year ago), I will just have to be strong, and hope that you are inspired enough by my picks that you purchase one of them and then let me live vicariously through you.

You Better Work: Week Forty Three

Written by Lindsay Scouras

Hey, remember when I used to wear black to work everyday, but then I got a new job where I got to pick out what I wanted to wear like a regular human being, so I took pictures of my outfits everyday on Instagram and then I blogged about it every week? I know, it hardly rings a bell to me too. Once I moved, my life was in shambles for a bit and my apartment was a disaster for months. Plus it was summer and life + work was so crazy. What’s even crazier is there actually were a lot of days that I did continue to take daily #ootd shots, but I never posted them because I was so far behind that I’ll felt like I couldn’t catch up.

But it’s a new year and as you may have heard from every overly-optimistic woman, it’s time for a fresh start. So the first day I went back to work after the holidays, I decided to pick back up again. Partly because I got a bunch of new clothes that I was super excited to show off, and also because it’s really something that I enjoy doing. It’s like a digital scrapbook of all your best (and sometimes worst) looks over a period of time. I love looking back at even just the small amount of pictures I did take and seeing what ensembles I put together. Some of them are pretty cute, if I do say so myself.

So now that it’s 2014, it’s time to get back into the swing of things. I did some math and figured out that based on the first week that I started my job on Nantucket, this would be week forty three (considering the last one was week eleven, we definitely have some catching up to do). So let’s delve right in!

Monday

j.crew sweater & skirt/forever 21 tights/old navy flats

Some people might think that this is a spring skirt, but I think a pop of daffodil yellow is just what the doctor ordered in January. I have this wool skirt in tan and I’m obsessed. It’s the perfect skirt for fall/winter. Both of these pieces were Christmas gifts and immediately after I opened them I pictured them together. I paired them with an old pair of lace tights and my new nude flats, and although you can’t see it in the picture, they have a snazzy gold heel. I wasn’t sure if I would be a fan but I’ve worn them multiple times and I love them.

Tuesday

j.crew blazer/ny & company top/gap pants/old navy flats/kate spade necklace

Does this blazer look familiar? It should, since I now have three of them in different colors. The J. Crew Schoolboy Blazer is one of the best fashion investments I ever made (well, I would have invested in them but I was fortunate enough to receive them as gifts). They go with everything and are so easy to throw on and just snazz up an outfit, no matter how casual. I picked up these printed pants on clearance at the Gap after Christmas, and practically fainted at the register when they told me they were $9. My wardrobe is very skirt and dress heavy, and I need some more fun pants to make it through the winter. No matter how basic the outfit, you can’t go wrong with these glitter flats. I saw them on someone’s Instagram and immediately tried to order them, but they were nowhere to be found on the Old Navy website. But once again, I couldn’t resist being on the mainland over Christmas and visited all my favorite stores, and there they were, in my size, for $11. I wanted to buy four of them so I could wear them for the next ten years. But I held back. I know… it’s hurts to have so much self control sometimes.

Wednesday

gap dress/kate spade bag/payless boots/paper source necklace

Even in the winter, I can’t resist a nautical look. This is appropriate though, because this is a very thick knit sweater dress (also on Gap clearance), accented by my new Kate Spade bag from my loving husband (also known as the Gift Whisperer, because he is just so damn good). But the piece that really makes this outfit for me is this super fun felt pom pom necklace that my mom found at Paper Source, of all places. I know, right? Not just for overpriced stationary anymore.

Thursday

target sweatshirt/victoria’s secret top/j.crew pants/old navy flats/claire’s bracelet

I don’t know if I can even express how much I wanted a jeweled sweatshirt. I believe I may have written about it a time or two. Unfortunately, all the ones I was dreaming of were a bajillion dollars, and I just couldn’t justify dropping such a large chunk of change on a sweatshirt. So just imagine the jazz dance number I performed down the aisles of Target when I found this one for $9.99. Dream.come.true. I wanted to profesh it up a bit for work, so I added a collared shirt and my teal skimmer pants with those gold heeled flats again.

Friday

old navy jacket/j.crew sweater/boutique at stowe mercantile skirt/express
tights/payless  booties/forever 21 necklace

I never expected to see me in a (faux) leather jacket either, and I certainly didn’t know if I could make it work for work, but I really love this ensemble. I loved it a little less when I got to work and saw every other person in my office in jeans. Yep. It was Clean Up Day and I didn’t even know it. Because they didn’t tell any of the new people, so all of us that had never been part of Clean Up Day had no idea of the lack of wardrobe constraints. Don’t worry, I have been promised a makeup day in the future. I actually wore this skirt my first day at my job back in March, so I love figuring out new ways to wear it in the chillier season.

So that’s it for week forty three, and if you can believe it, I already have pictures from week forty four. Bam! Who owns this New Year’s thing? Me. Well, at least for another week.

Dress Has Always Been My Strongest Suit (but not dressy casual)

Written by Lindsay Scouras

Guys, it’s happening. A mere two weeks from now, the Pinkerton Academy Class of 2003 will be gathering to celebrate our ten year reunion (along with probably every other class of ’03 in the continental U.S., it is the weekend of Thanksgiving after all).

via

I was first approached about the idea of the reunion back in March when I got an email from Tim, one of our class liaisons (that’s right, because when you go to a school as large as Pinkerton, you need more than one person who agrees in their senior year that they will write updates for the alumni magazine for the rest of their lives, bless their hearts) asking me if I wanted to be involved in the planning of the reunion. My heart cried out “yes!” as I live for party planning, but my head reminded me that I just accepted a job a week before on Nantucket and would soon be moving even further away from Derry, N.H. than I already was.

I told Tim that while I would love to help, I wasn’t sure if it was practical to dive into such a responsibility when I was moving somewhere that required multiple methods of transportation just to return to the mainland. I got no response, until 24 hours letter a message popped up in my inbox that simply read, “I decided. You’re helping.”

So for months now, myself and the other members of our little committee have been putting together this shindig (thank you, Internet) that will take place on November 30 at the Thirsty Moose Taphouse in Portsmouth, N.H. As happy as I am to have been a part of the experience, there has been one thing that has been plaguing throughout the planning process:

What the hell are we supposed to wear to this thing?

Because I base everything that I am unsure of on things I’ve seen in movies, I originally pictured a gorgeous dress because I assumed that all reunions take place in fancy hotels. I should have known better, as we had our prom in the gym, but moving on. I immediately thought that I would probably just wear some version of this:

via

But wouldn’t you know, you just can’t find any quality marabou trim anymore.

So I was left only with the minimal guidelines that I was given via an email thread sent out to the planning committee: dressy casual.

Can we talk about what that even means? The only parameters I was given was no jeans. Also, let’s remind ourselves that it is being held in a taphouse. What’s a girl to do?

So once again, I took to the Internet. I put an APB out on Twitter, contacted my most fashionable friends, reached out to my Boston Blogger cohorts, and stalked the Pinterest boards of super-stylish people to determine what the true definition of “dressy casual” is. It turns out… I still have no idea. There is still no concrete definition of what dressy casual is, just many people’s interpretations of it. I am by no means an authority on what everyone should and shouldn’t wear, I will leave that to the professionals and the gays. But I do love fashion as a form of self-expression, and when are you more concerned about how you’re presenting yourself than at your high school reunion?

So here are some inspiration pictures I put together of some fun ensembles that I would love to see anyone rocking when they roll up at the Thirsty Moose that Saturday. Some of these need some slight modifications to account for New England weather (I don’t see how anyone could ever forget the snow on Prom day), but overall I think there are definitely some great pieces that anyone can work into their look, no matter what your fashion comfort level may be.

True Colors

left/middle/right

I still don’t understand when people tell me that they are afraid of color. Are you also afraid of going outdoors?! Because color is everywhere, and it should be embraced. I’m slightly biased, as I recently left a job in which I was required to wear almost head to toe black and everyday, a little piece of my soul died. That is why I am the number one cheerleader of color and think that every person should have one shade that makes them feel amazing (and no, neutrals like tan, gray and black do not count). If you’re shy about it, you don’t have to pile on more than one bold pigment like in the middle photo and the one on the right. What I love about the picture on the left is that the rest of the outfit is relatively simple- you can never go wrong with black and white. But you gotta show a little personality somewhere, whether it’s a bright lip color or a jewel hued clutch. Start with a basic ensemble and accent it with one (or three, go on with your bad self) piece(s) that really pops for a standout moment.

Smells like Team Spirit

left/middle/right

I can’t ever resist a good theme. If you find yourself feeling fashionably uninspired, look no further than the PA’s classic colors. Not only is red, white and black one of my favorite color combinations (always chic, in my opinion), but you can never go wrong paying homage to the Astroman at a school function. The look on the left is super on trend with the leather mini, but a striped long-sleeved shirt is the “casual” to the skirt’s “dressy.” As with many of these skirted options, you might have to thrown on a pair of black tights, but this brightly hued coat will keep you warm on that sure to be chilly New Hampshire evening while making you easy to spot across the bar. Win win. If you don’t have a pair of red pants by now, you need to get off the computer and go get a pair now.  I’m serious- you can finish reading this later. I am obsessed with my red pants, and I got them at TJ Maxx for $16 when I was weary of the longevity of the colored-pant trend. They can be worn in a multitude of color combos, like with this Dalmatian print top or later with a more nautical scheme (my other favorite). The girl on the right is definitely a little more formal, but again, with a pair of black patterned tights and some ankle booties, this look can be dressed down to be taphouse appropriate.

Crazy Pants

left/middle/right

Ladies, want to ensure you’re not totally overdressed? Wear pants. Pants are by default, a more casual look than a dress or a skirt. Now sure, you could go and throw on a pair of black trousers that have been kicking around in your closet since you got a job at Applebee’s, or you could live a little and mix it up with one of these fun patterns or bold hues. If the leopard is channeling Peg Bundy a little too much for you, go for a more attainable pattern like polka dots. And maybe the harem-style slacks in the middle aren’t your cup of tea, but the drapeyness takes away a bit of the formality (and it’s sort of like wearing socially acceptable pajamas, if you really think about it). The one thing that all these looks have in common is that everything else is super simple- when you break it down, these are neutral tops and a solid pair of heels. So don’t be afraid- WEAR THE PANTS and show them who’s boss.

Liquid Leather

left/middle/right

Another trend I’m super excited about right now is (p)leather leggings. Let’s be real. As much as I love clothes, I spend the good majority of my days off in leggings, and even when I am in real clothes, I spend 100% of my time thinking about how I’d rather be wearing leggings. Am I the only one? So when I got a pair of these, I was super excited because a) they are amazingly smooth and I couldn’t stop running my hands across them, and b) they are just like regular leggings, but are acceptable to wear to the bar. Target has some great hybrid pairs right now like the ones in the photo on the left- half shiny, half regular stretchy material. I love all the different ways you can dress these up- just look at the three different options here! A sequined moto jacket, a neon coat, or a white tuxedo blazer are all winners in my book. Just please ladies, follow the cues of the stylish women in these photos and wear a shirt or blazer that is long enough to cover your ass. I beg you. In fact, do this with all forms of stretchy pants. I don’t care how fat or thin you are, it just needs to happen. Let’s all raise our right hands and swear on our 500-page yearbooks, okay?

Sparkle Queens

left/middle/right

I don’t know if I can even express how in love I am with these looks. A little sparkle is always a good thing, and even more sparkle is like, the best thing ever. J. Crew has been all over this lately, which is perfect because I think it is the definition of dressy casual. What’s more dressy than a sequined skirt, and what’s more casual than a worn-in chambray? The knit hat can obviously go, we are going to be inside, after all. I like how both the outfits on the left and the right work in a colored shoe and a statement necklace. As for the middle photo, I get it- none of us are Blake Lively. She is an Amazonian-ly tall freak of nature that could probably do a high kick over my head. I chose this picture because I am all about dress shorts for events, especially in the colder months with a pair of tights underneath. I like how she balances out showing five feet of leg with a slightly over sized blazer and button down that have more of a men’s cut to them.

Sweet Tartan

left/middle/right

While I love that we were never forced to wear uniforms at Pinkerton, there is still a soft spot in my hard for a good plaid skirt. It’s like a little school girl, a little L.L. Bean, and a little early 90’s grunge. But wouldn’t you know, plaid is totally in right now, and like sequins, it’s all about working it in with a contradictory element. A plaid skirt could totally go all Baby, One More Time on you if you pair it with a boring button down, but a chambray shirt gives it a more casual feel (accented with a good pair of heels and a few baubles to keep it from going too woodsy). While Hermione’s look is a little more formal than what we are going for, I like how she paired it with a cropped leather jacket. If you’re thinking of wearing a dress to a reunion and it feels like you’re too done up, especially depending on your location, a cute biker jacket is a great way to take it down a level and make you feel a little less princess, a little more rock and roll.

The Jumpoff

left/middle/right

Hear me out on this one- I know a jumpsuit is like, WTF, as it is one piece and how are you supposed to go to the bathroom? But I think there is something so chic about this, and you could not ask for a ensemble that requires less effort than this. Think about it- there is only one thing you have to put on! No time spent trying to figure out which top and bottom go together, or whether you should wear a skirt instead. It’s easy breezy, put it on and you’re ready to go. Well, not without some fun jewelry, because as you can see, many of these jumpsuits are super simple. I bought a strapless black jumpsuit and every time I put it on, I feel like I am channeling Bianca Jagger at Studio 54, without the ridiculous drug use, of course. These short ones might be a bit scary if you’re new to the jumpsuit thing, because you have to have just the right shoe depending on where the bottom of your pant leg hits. I personally prefer the wide-leg version, as it makes you feel like you are floating across the room with every step. Just make sure they are hemmed correctly- I haven’t worn mine in forever because I took a horrible digger in them when a heel got caught in a seam of my pant leg. The things I’ll do for fashion.

Winter Whites

left/middle/right

Did you guys know we can wear white after Labor Day? Yeah- turns out it was just a rouse all those years by our mothers, who were sick of trying to wash stains out of our clothes. Now that doesn’t mean that you should wear your white linen beach cover up out and about in December, but it turns out, it’s not so much about the hue as it is about the fabric. Go ahead, wear white freely all year long, just take cues from your environment. You should not be traipsing around in January in a pair of strappy white sandals (as a matter of fact, you probably shouldn’t do that during any month, ever). However, it is socially acceptable to wear your white jeans with boots and a cardigan or stock up on sweater dresses in shades of cream and ivory. Or take a cue from this lady on the left and work it on a night out with a sparkly top. Add fun accents like leopard accessories and shiny gold jewelry.

As for my ideal reunion ensemble? I actually have no idea. In looking at these photos, I actually felt overwhelmed with options because I JUST WANT TO WEAR THEM ALL. And short of doing Academy Awards host-style costume change every hour (don’t tempt me), I need to narrow down my options a bit. But seriously, take these suggestions with a grain of salt. Be yourself. Show off your assets that make you feel amazing and downplay what makes you feel eehh. Really, just wear what you want. As long as it’s not jeans.

Oh and guys? I didn’t forget about you. But I can’t tell you how to dress, because half of you could care less and the other half are dressed by their significant others. Since you’re not supposed to wear jeans and it’s a little unnecessary for you to show up in a full suit (unless you are dying to, then hey, go for it), your options are slightly more limited. Here’s a little inspiration for you too:

yowza.

Yes, I understand. You are not a male model, and therefore will not look like this in clothes. That’s cool, because like I said, none of us are Blake Lively. So I guess we’re all even. But there are definitely some elements that you guys have to work with. Like the ladies, I encourage you not to be afraid of color. Did you know there are other shades of pants besides khaki? My husband has recently acquired a few primary color shades of pants (red, blue, yellow) and he gets compliments on them all the time. I’m serious- it’s hard to go places together because he sometimes appears to be better dressed. Add a pair of fun patterned socks women will think that you spent hours putting together your outfit. And I’m not saying you have to wear a scarf, but it will be almost December, and some sort of cardigan or sweater over a button down is like, the epitome of men’s winter style. Jackets aren’t necessary, but definitely gives off the vibe that you put a little more thought into it than the average Schmo. And finally, I get that it’s Movember, and you might be excited to show off your scruff that you may not have had in high school, but try giving the facial hair a quick trim before heading out for the evening, eh?

That’s all for now- see you at the reunion!

Dress Me, Kate

Written by Lindsay Scouras

It’s no secret that Kate Spade is hands down my favorite designer. I don’t know how I went to being a girl from NH that literally had never heard of Kate Spade until they starting selling knockoffs at the Derry flea market, to a woman that not only loves the brand but owns more of it than I ever imagined I would have of any one designer. I imagine living in such close vicinity to the outlet may have had something to do with it. Since I clearly can’t afford most of these clothes and accessories (I would say 85% of the Kate Spade merchandise I own was a result of gifts), I spend a lot of time staring at pieces online and dreaming of how I would style them.

Knowing that this week was New York Fashion Week, I spent much of my boat ride back to the mainland on Friday fighting with the WiFi on the Hyline, frantically searching online galleries for pics from the Spring 2014 showcase. When I heard the theme involved Paris, garden parties, and travel, I died a little inside, knowing that many of the pieces would soon by on my wish list, and by that I mean, my mental list that I hold onto and hope in two years I can get it on clearance at the outlet.

The only thing that bums me out about the NYFW presentation is that you don’t get a good look at the smaller pieces, like bags and jewelry (which are my favorite things to look at from Kate Spade), because it’s more about the overall looks on the parade of models. Regardless, I was of course in love with the bright colors and the shapes of some of the dresses and skirts, which goes back to why I love Kate Spade in the first place- because it’s fun!

The only thing that wasn’t so fun to me was… the lemons. I’m all for the quirky touches and random objects that KSNY chooses to highlight with particular collections, but mostly I found many of these garments to be ill-fitting. Frankly, I wasn’t sure if they reminded me of a small child or a grandmother.

Please don’t hate me, Kate Spade. I will love you forever. As long as you take it easy on the lemons.

You Better Work: Week Eleven

Written by Lindsay Scouras

Week Eleven could also be referred to as Week Where-I-Was-Trying-Not-to-Lose-It-and-OMG-We’re-Homeless-and-How-the-Hell-Can-I-Think-About-What-to-Wear-Right-Now?! I was also running out of ways to figure out how to take my daily mirror shots in a dark old house, resulting is some barely visible #OOTD pics.

Monday:

No outfit today, as it was Memorial Day and I was not at the office! Take that, former retail career! But for real, I actually was working that day. With Steve! We got the opportunity to work at one of the historic sites, and although it was one of our first Monday holidays off together, I couldn’t let Steve miss the opportunity to do something historical and get paid for it. So we got to make a little extra money, hang out together, and it was the first time all weekend that it was actually beautiful weather! So everyone wins. Except my outfit, because I was dressed like a Best Buy sales person.

Tuesday:

j.crew blazer & striped shirt/banana republic skirt/target shoes/ebay necklace/vintage ring

I bought this necklace on eBay for a steal of $13. However, in one of my many recent moves, one of the stones popped out, as $13 necklaces tend to do. I finally got around to supergluing it back together and celebrated by wearing it with many other colors all in one outfit. This is a case of one of those times that I get an outfit idea stuck in my head the night before, and often I am crushed when it doesn’t come out as I hoped the next day, but I’m happy with the results of this one.

Wednesday:

old navy wrap dress/vintage necklace/forever 21 ring & socks/ll bean wellies

Wednesday I was not having a good day. I don’t remember the particular reason (probably didn’t help that it was raining), but I just remember thinking to myself early on, “if this day gets any better, by the end of it I’ll be ROLLING IN GLASS” (one of my most favorite Will & Grace quotes ever). But then a miraculous thing happened. In the breakroom at work, while furiously refilling my water glass, a coworker asked me if my Old Navy dress was from Diane von Furstenburg. As in DV mother effin-F. Instantly, I felt like my day had improved. Sure, she was probably just being friendly or maybe assumed that the lovely Ms. von Furstenberg owns the right to all wrap dresses (as she should), but talk about a simple statement that can suddenly make you feel so much better. It’s like, “have you lost weight?!” or “did you just get your hair colored?” when actually it’s been months since you’ve been to a hairdresser. Sometimes it’s just the little things, you know?

Thursday:

h&m denim jacket/banana republic top/target dress/ny & co flats/j.crew bag/forever 21 necklace

You may recognize this super old Isaac Mizrahi dress from about a million events over the last five years. I’m obsessed with it, and most recently wore it on Easter with a pink fascinator, because you know, I’m fancy. But it wasn’t until this day that I thought to wear it as a skirt. I remember it was really beautiful out that day, and as I was walking around downtown in the gorgeous weather and my flowy skirt, I was thinking about how great I felt (obviously a 180 from the day before). That was, until I had about four almost-Marilyn moments in the strong Nantucket breeze. I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to hold my skirt in between my legs as I walked. I guess we really can’t have it all, huh?

Friday:

h&m top & denim jacket/tj maxx pants/old navy flats/forever 21 collar necklace

My apologies for the worst #OOTD wrap up photo. In this particular house I was residing in at the time, my room was a horrible place to take photos. So I used to take my mirror downstairs to this little sunroom thing because it was nice and bright. However, other people occasionally stay at this house, and on any given days there are landscapers working outside, electricians coming in, and things of the sort. At this time, there were people downstairs and I was embarrassed at the thought of walking around, clutching my $5 Walmart mirror as I shamelessly attempted to take my own photo. I just couldn’t do it. So I quickly snapped this in my room where the lighting was terrible and all of my earthly possessions had started to take over every inch, making it difficult to not look like someone from Hoarders.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to take a week off from #OOTD pics, as Week Twelve is nonexistent in the land of selfies. Things were just too crazy and it wouldn’t have been anything worth blogging about anyway. Plus this whole thing is kind of superficial (I admit it) and when you have like actual serious stuff on your mind, the last thing you want to do is fake a smile in the mirror for yourself.

Hope to see you again for Week Thirteen!

You Better Work: Week Ten

Written by Lindsay Scouras

I mentioned in my last post that this week (which I want to say in real time is Week Twelve?) I didn’t take a single outfit photo. Due to the Great Nantucket Housing Crisis, taking a picture of my outfit at the end of each day was next to impossible. Since we moved around so much, I really couldn’t find a location in the places we were staying in that had proper lighting for mirror selfie shots. And at the moment, I am literally pulling items out of randomly strewn about suitcases and hoping they match. I’m sorry, my head just wasn’t in it this week.

But luckily for you all, I’m lazy and I still have leftover Week Ten pictures to blog about! So here we go.

Monday:

old navy dress & flats/ll bean coat & wellies/gifted scarf/alex & ani bracelets/aldo watch/vintage ring

Hey, did you guys know it rains on Nantucket? If you haven’t gathered that by now, well then… you must be new round these parts. I don’t have an address yet, so I’ve been getting all mail sent to my office. Getting anything is really exciting when you’re anywhere far away from your family and friends, and that is even more true when you’re on an island. It’s like literally a connection to the outside world. So you can imagine my joy when I got not just any mail, but a package! My good friend Alisa sent me a new job gift, this lovely nautical scarf that obviously matches everything I own. I’m sure this will be just the first of many appearances on the blog.

Tuesday:

ny & co top & cardi/gap trouser jeans/payless flats/kate spade bag/rue 21 belt/forever 21 necklace

I’ve said before that my office is slightly casual, but I still have a personal no jeans at work policy. Okay, a no blue jeans at work policy. But this was a day where I knew I would be running around to every hotel on the island delivering brochures, so I wanted to be prepared. I bought these denim trousers forever ago and almost forgot I had them. I might save this for a future casual Friday look (not that we have ever declared that, but that may also be a personal decision one day).

Wednesday:

j.crew blazer, bag & necklace/gap trench/banana republic top/h&m jeans/ll bean boat shoes
If there’s one item you have to bring with you to Nantucket this summer, it is WHITE JEANS. I’m not kidding. I know the official pants of Nantucket are Reds, but you can’t walk five feet down Main Street without running into a gaggle of women all clad in white jeans. I decided it was time to finally break mine out (which I became obsessed with last year and found this pair for $10 at H&M). Then I kept hearing people say you’re not supposed to wear white jeans until after Memorial Day. Uh, since when? I was always told that Easter was the dawn of the white shoes/dress/pants time of acceptance. Is this really a thing? How many of you actually still follow these “rules” in the year 2013?

Thursday:

h&m dress/forever 21 belt/nine west pumps via tj maxx/jewelry sale necklace

So on Thursday I wanted to look a little extra snazzy because we had our members celebration that evening, and it was the first time a lot of our donors would be back for the summer. We all had our roles, and of course, I was assigned to the photo op. This dress is just so universal and can be used for almost any occasion, and all you have to do is mix up your accessories so it’s a different look every time. And can we talk about how Rachel wore it on an episode of Glee? Yes, yes we can.

Friday:

gap sweater/ny&co top/j.crew jeans/ll bean wellies/old navy necklace

I mean, just the fact that I have to plan at least two outfits a week around rain boots is kind of ridiculous, but CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. Because of the weather, I opted to completely tie my hair back which I hate. Can we get personal for a moment? We all have things we don’t like about ourselves, amirite ladies? We’re supposed to be embracing ourselves, flaws and all, but I’m going to be real and say that you just have to emphasize your strong points. I have never liked wearing my hair totally pulled back because I just don’t like the way my face looks without hair. I know, that’s weird, right? A sock bun is one thing, because I think it’s interesting enough to make you forget about any really distinct facial features. But a slicked back pony just ain’t me, hence the addition of a braid. When I do feel like I look pretty, 3/4 of that prettiness seems to come from my hair. That’s why I spend so much time on it and treat it nicely and buy it expensive products. But sometimes the skies open up and spending twenty minutes curling your hair to have it fall flat on your walk to work just isn’t practical.

I think we have one more week of outfits to wrap up before my selfie sabbatical. Thanks for putting up with some personal jibber jabber there in between nautical blazers and colored jeans.

You Better Work: Week Nine

Written by Lindsay Scouras

Week nine starts to get into some tricky territory. By this point, I’ve worn most of the things I really like. We’re moving into the potential repeat zone (nooooooooo). When I moved here, it was still freezing, even snowing occasionally. Although the weather hasn’t been amazing, it is late May after all, and there are certain items on my rolling rack that are just no longer appropriate.

Thankfully, as of today we have a truck booked and we will finally be bringing all of our worldly possessions to the island, meaning my clothes and I will be finally reunited! And I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, it will feel so good.

So without further adieu, I give you… week nine.

Monday:

forever 21 shirt/j.crew skirt/nine west shoes

Guys, I cannot lie to you. This is one of my all time favorite ensembles. I most recently wore this for the Fit In Clouds photo shoot that I was super excited to be a part of, and then repeated again for a Monday that I also happened to be attending a social media course with Jason from Social Bridge Consulting and Holly from Nantucket BlACKbook. You know I like to straddle the line between looking profesh and fun, and what’s more fun than a fuchsia skirt?

Tuesday:

lacoste sweater/forever 21 pants & headband/payless flats/kate spade keychain (turned necklace)

I don’t know what got into me when I got up on Tuesday. I decided I was bored with my hair, over the weather, and was in desperate need of some hot pink lipstick. It was just one of those days, you know? I was happy how this look turned out though. I felt a little vintage pin-up, aside from the fact that I had all my clothes on.

Wednesday:

j.crew blazer/gap sleeveless turtleneck/tj maxx pants/target shoes/forever 21 necklace

Wednesday was a day where I had to look good. Like I know I aim for that everyday, but Wednesday was super important because RON HOWARD showed up at the office that day. I am not kidding. The only reason I feel okay mentioning it now is because clearly he is long gone and also he tweeted about it, so it’s common knowledge. Yes, Ron Howard has Twitter. He’s even cooler than you thought. Unfortunately I do not have anything else cool to report, because we did not get a chance to meet, and therefore I was not cast as an extra in his new movie. But we totally made eye contact when he walked through the office to charge his phone as I stared longingly out of the conference room door. So there was that.

Thursday:

lord & taylor top/forever 21 skirt & belt/j.crew bag/target shoes/h&M jacket

Like I said, I’m starting to run out of options with what I have here. So why not mix patterns? In fact, why not do it anyway? I was also excited to break out my denim jacket (I was able to snag just a few spring things the last time I was off island for all of ten minutes, obviously this had to come with) even thought I constantly get made fun of for the buttons. Um, it’s called flair and the 80’s are supposed to be back and everything, so let’s just chill out, okay?

Friday:

old navy top & flats/the boutique at stowe mercantile skirt/vintage necklace

Ohemgee, it was finally nice enough out to wear a linen skirt. What you don’t see in these photos is the awesome leopard trench that topped this whole outfit off (it really tied together nicely with the colors of the flats). It also marked the beginning of the first weekend that Steve and I had off together in which he didn’t have to work in a restaurant and I wasn’t working in retail. I NEVER THOUGHT THE DAY WOULD COME. And then it did. And then we spent the whole weekend doing touristy Nantucket things. As soon as I edit the photos, I’ll share those too. Because I know it’s not enough for you to see what I’m wearing everyday.

Until then,

You Better Work- Week Eight

Written by Lindsay Scouras

Here we are, the two month mark. I feel like I say this every week, therefore totally boring all of you, but I just can’t get over that a mere eight weeks ago I was living a completely different life than I am today. Okay, maybe not completely different. I still watch my same TV shows (maybe just a little less of them, with no DVR yet), I still haven’t really done any cooking for myself- basically what I’m trying to say is I’m still the same person.

But being in a different place, working a new job, and even something as simple as wearing the things I want to wear has made me feel like this whole new person. Is everything perfect? No, of course not. Am I stress-free? Never. But it’s a different type of stress, the kind that comes from wanting to be good at your job and really caring about the work that you’re putting out there. What’s really made a difference is Steve was finally down here with me this whole week, which has been amazing. Not just because I get to eat again, but because it’s just nice to see your person everyday when you come home.

But enough with the schmultz. Let’s go to the outfits!

Monday:

banana republic dress/payless flats/kris nations necklace

I was kind of all over the place with my clothes this week. Steve and I were dog sitting, which meant that we found ourselves living between two places that both aren’t ours. I tried to stick to easy things as I was running back and forth every few days to grab clothes. When I looked at some of these pictures, I was like, “ehhh, these are a little boring.” That’s the tricky thing- no matter how much you plan, sometimes, real life takes over. I have always liked this dress, mainly for its ease. You throw it on and your done. Ready for anything… like a safari! I needed a little color so I threw on red plaid flats. Why not?

Tuesday:

charlotte russe dress/j crew top/old navy flats

I admit, sometimes I even surprise myself with these looks. I’m not saying I’m God’s gift to nautical fashion (although if someone else wanted to say it, that would be okay), but I looked back at this one that I kind of threw on and was like, “damn, I really liked that outfit!” The weather was once again, crummy, hence the pulled back hair, which I also ended up liking. And of course, the return of… the Scrabble earrings! I have always considered these one of my “signature” pieces. I used to wear them all the time, and I noticed recently I’ve been wearing less fun earrings in place of more simple ones to compliment statement necklaces. I bought these when I lived in Cambridge at Joie de Vivre, and I used to buy them as gifts for people all the time. Unfortunately, they no longer carry them and I’ve had to resort to finding them online.

Wednesday:

j crew blazer/h&m dress/old navy flats/diy kate spade necklace

Notice the new mirror location? Told you I was back and forth! Luckily my dog sitting gig came with a full-length mirror. After work on Wednesday I worked an event at the museum, so I had to look a little extra profesh (but with comfortable shoes). I bought this dress at H&M so many years ago and it has been with me through a multitude of events. I remember buying it for something crazy like $11 and it did not fit at all. A few nips and hems later, and it’s one of my most used outfits. Oddly enough, the material almost feels like it’s water resistant or something, which I don’t totally understand but it’s nice and light for events in the summer months.

Thursday:

old navy sweater/gap shirt/j crew pants/forever 21 belt/payless flats

I bought these polka dotted chambray pants during a jaunt to the J. Crew outlet the last time I was on the mainland. They sat in the bag for almost two weeks because I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to wear them with. And then, my boss showed up to work in the exact same pants. Not that we can’t both own these pants, but after that I feared we would both show up in them on the same day. So I still didn’t wear them. Finally, I’m like, what the heck? You might not get it right the first time, but isn’t that what fashion is all about?

Friday:

hand-me-down dress (from my sister)/ny & co cardi/lululemon leggings/target boots

Okay, so I realize that there are a handful of Fridays where I am basically wearing a different version of the same outfit. This was another day that I was headed back to the mainland on the ferry after work. So the goal is to wear something appropriate for work but comfortable that you can wear it all day, including at work, on the boat, and then in the 1.5 hour car ride. That’s a pretty tall order, wardrobe wise. Since the weather hasn’t been great, I tend to go with the dress/legging/boot combo. Now that it’s getting a bit warmer (but barely) I’ll probably switch to a flat… or maybe even a flip flop. I cannot wait.
